Sword Katana
The samurai’s chief weapons were the sword, the bow, the halberd, or the spear and later, the musket and cannon. Bows were taller than a person, and mounted archers had to shoot arrows with deadly accuracy while galloping at full speed.
The samurai katana was the warrior’s most prized possession, described as “the soul of the samurai.” Samurai katana were forged in great secrecy with much ceremony. Swordsmiths were the most revered of all artisans, sometimes engraving their signature on the blades they made. They developed techniques of beating and folding the steel to produce a hard but flexible blade with a shallow curve and razor-sharp cutting edge. Samurai katana were also admired for their beauty. The beating and folding produced a fine wave pattern along the edge. Swordguards and scabbards were decorated with birds and flowers. Each sword had an awe-inspiring spirit of its own, so it had to be treated with great care by its owner and never drawn without just cause. Â
Full Japanese armor consisted of at least 23 different items. Japanese armor for the body was made of leather or lacquered metal scales strung together with colored silk braids, while the fearsome helmets and masks were designed to strike terror into the enemy. Japanese armor changed as weapons and ways of fighting changed. Warriors needed greater protection and more mobility on foot. Â
Up to the end of the 15th century in feudal Japan, there were strict rules for battles. Leaders on each side agreed on the time and place. The action consisted largely of single combat. Each warrior rode forward loudly boasting his family connections and brave deeds until he found a rival of equal status. The fight was always to the death. When a combatant fell, his rival would dismount, kill him, and cut off his head with his wakizashi sword. Once the enemy had been defeated, the victors slaughtered all the survivors to prevent revenge attacks. However, during the Period of Warring States, samurai codes of combat were forgotten. Then surprise attacks, fighting between men of all ranks, and large-scale maneuvers became the rule.
