Samurai Wakizashi
Samurai Wakizashi

How many swords did a samurai carry to battle?
I’ve seen pics and drawings of samurai posing with two or even three swords. I’m guessing one of them would be a katana and the other maybe a wakizashi.
Would they take more than one katana to battle?
Two to three was the most common. The katana was their main weapon for battle and what-not. The wakiszashi was a smaller sword that, according to some, never left the samurai’s side. Some also carried a smaller dagger called a tanto. Though not unheard of, they would rarely ever take two katana into battle as it was simply not practical in a battle situation.
